The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy written by the British author J. R. R. Tolkien that was published for the first time between the years of 1954 and 1955.
The story is divided into three books, and can be considered a fantasy novel, inspired by the Scottish, Nordic, Germanic, Celtic and Finish mythologies. The action takes place in a fictional land, called Middle Earth, and among the main characters there are humans, but also fantastic mythological creatures, such as hobbits, elves or trolls, among many others.
The story of The Lord of the Rings is part of a fictional universe created by J. R.R. Tolkien, in which the majority of his narratives are set; the author has developed this imaginary place with great detail, having created maps, invented the History of the Middle Earth and of the different groups that have inhabited there throughout the ages, and he even created a specific language with the respective alphabet.
Along the three books, the reader can follow the story of an hobbit name Frodo Baggins, and his journey from home to Mordor, in order to destroy a powerful ring he had inherited from his uncle; Frodo is accompanied by three other hobbits, an elf, a dwarf, a wizard and two humans, in a representation of all the species that live in the Middle Earth.
The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful sagas in the world of literature, and has sold over 150 million copies since the first edition. The trilogy was also adapted to the cinema by director Peter Jackson; the first movie premiered in 2001 and the last in 2003, in a total of three movies, each one corresponding to the respective book, and with the same titles. Just like the books, all the movies were very popular among the public and specialized critic, and all of them figure on the lists of the most viewed films of all time, most profitable and the last movie is one of the movies of all time that has received more Oscars, in a total of eleven awards.
