Philip Kotler Biography
Born in 1931 in Chicago in the United States, Kotler is an important scholar with a great influence in the marketing area. Between 1948 and 1950 studied at the De Paul University and later received the Master degree in Economy by the University of Chicago and the PhD by MIT, institution where he was student of Milton Friedman and Paul Samuelson. He later made a post-PhD in Mathematics at Harvard University and, another in Behavioral Science at Chicago University.
Author of numerous books and articles, to him is due the marketing recognition as management central duty. To him is also due expressions like “demarketing” (that shows the idea of a marketing element that seeks to discourage the market to desire a certain product or service) and “social marketing” (that respects the use of marketing in the spread of useful ideas from the social point of view). Before Kotler, bibliography about marketing limited itself to describe its functions. Like Kotler, marketing begins to be a true knowledge course.
From the principal books is highlighted “Marketing Management”, considered by many as the “bible” of marketing, counting already with several editions. Beyond this one, a reference also for “Marketing Models”, Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations” and “Principles of Marketing”.
