Sergei Loznitsa

Sergei Loznitsa is a Belarusian movie director, mostly known for the work he developed in the areas of both documental and fictional cinema.

Born in 1964, Loznitsa started his career in the field of exact sciences, first by getting his Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics in the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, in Ukraine, after which he started working in the Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics, where he developed some research in the area of Artificial Intelligence, between 1987 and 1991.

In 1991, Loznitsa started his journey in the world of cinema, by started studying in the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), and 5 years later, in 1996, he premiered his first documentary, entitled “Today We Are Going To Build A House”, which granted him various award nominations, including a nomination for Best Documentary in the International Potsdam Film Festival, in Germany.

In the following years, Sergei Loznitsa continued to focus his work on documental movies, having directed over 10 documentaries, some short and some long, including “The Train Stop” (2000), “Landscape” (2003) or “Blockade” (2005).

Loznitsa’s first fictional movie was released in 2010, and it went by the name “My Joy”. His first attempt in fiction was extremely well received by the specialized critics, and the movie received several nominations on international cinema festivals, like Cannes Film Festival or Russian Guild of Film Critics.

In 2013, Sergei Loznitsa founded his own company of movies production and distribution, called ATOMS & VOID. Nowadays, Loznitsa lives in Germany, where he continues working in the film industry, directing short and long films, both documentaries and fictional movies.
