Star Wars is a science-fiction series of movies that illustrate the story and adventures of a group of characters that belong to a different Universe.
The original idea was conceived by George Lucas, who wrote and produced the first six movies of the saga, all by Luscasfilm, and he was also the director of four of the movies. Nowadays, the series has already eight movies:
Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
George Lucas has created and written the ideas for the two first trilogies; the first three movies (Episodes IV – VI) tell the stories of the adventurous rebels Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), who come together to fight the dark forces led by the Emperor and Darth Vader, whose goal is to conquer and rule the entire Universe. The second trilogy, although was produced after, appears as a prequel, where the story of Darth Vader, or Anakin Skywalker, is told since his childhood until he becomes one of the most powerful man of the galaxy. The two last movies timeline follows the end of the last movie of the first trilogy, namely “Return of the Jedi”. The narrative takes place years after the victory of the rebels and the reestablishment of peace in the entire galaxy, in a time when new dark forces are threatening the harmony of the people; the main characters Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo continue to be the most important fighters for the peace of the Universe, and some new character join them, namely Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega), while the villain Darth Vader, who was defeated in the previous trilogy, has now a successor named Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).
Since the very first episode, the Star Wars saga reached an unprecedented level of popularity, and it has until this day a solid group of fans worldwide that follows closely all novelties related to this fictional world created by George Lucas. The saga was and still is such a huge success that it became a franchise, having multiple collection and decorative items, toys, games, clothing, amongst others, many times in partnership with other famous brands.
In 2012, Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney, and the later also got the rights for the following movies within the Star Wars Universe; however, George Lucas still had a saying in the last two movies, having been the consultant for both of them.
There are also two animation series within the Star Wars saga, that take place in the same Universe, and where some of the main characters also appear, in an animated version, namely “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, which was in exhibition between 2008 and 2014, and “Star Wars Rebels”, in exhibition since 2014. In 2016, the first spin-off of this saga, which is a story that takes place in the same world, with some ties to the original story, premiered, and went by the title “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
